ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE (ART)

THE GOLD STANDARD OF SOFT-TISSUE THERAPY

Its effectiveness has made it one of the most sought-after treatments amongst the active population.

About ACT

Active Release Technique (ART) is a world-renown treatment of the body’s soft-tissues (i.e., muscles, tendons, fascia). Its effectiveness has made it one of the most sought-after treatments amongst the active population.

PROPEL’s chiropractors utilize ART in every treatment plan.

Active Release Technique (ART) ® is an advanced soft-tissue management system, designed to target soft tissue adhesions (or ‘scarring’) which results in increased soft tissue tension, pain and dysfunction. Adhesions can be brought on by a variety of factors, but most likely are a result of acute injuries (sprains, strains), or repetitive and cumulative strain that that is common in the workplace or in athletic training and competition.

ADHESIONS (AKA. SCAR TISSUE) ARE A RESULT OF:

1) Local muscular injury

Muscular tearing leads to a healing response that eventually results in significant synthesis of collagen. Initially, the collagen that is synthesized is done so in a haphazard manner, creating adhesions (scarring) within and in between muscular segments. This tissue is rough in nature, and can create irritation to the surrounding soft-tissues and nerves, causing both pain and decreased function.

The same response can occur slowly, through a repetitive strain mechanism.

2) Repetitive strain

Repetitive and prolonged muscular contractions (such as those experienced in the legs of an endurance runner, OR in the neck and forearms of the office worker) consequently lead to a decrease in local soft-tissue blood-flow and oxygen supply. In response to this, the body, in an effort to conserve energy and resources, begins to replace the tissue with a form of tissue that doesn’t require much oxygen or energy to function…namely scar tissue (i.e.: adhesions). This leads to pain and dysfunction.

WHAT TYPES OF CONDITIONS ARE TREATED WITH ART?

All musculoskeletal injuries will have a component of soft tissue dysfunction. Thus, Active Release Technique is often used as a component of almost all treatment protocols. The following are just a few examples of what conditions are treated with ART:

  • Muscle tension (i.e. from posture)
  • Muscle injury
  • Repetitive Strain Disorders (RSDs)
  • Tendinitis or Tendinosis
  • Whiplash
  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Low Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
  • Rotator Cuff Pain
  • Nerve Entrapment (i.e.: carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
  • Patellar Tendinosis (aka. Patellar Tendinitis or Jumpers Knee)
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome
  • Shin Splints
  • Plantar Fasciitis
